Actinic Keratosis
Actinic Keratosis (sometimes known as AK). What is it?

This is a common skin disorder usually found among older people as it is the result of long term exposure to the sun. Still, they can also be found in people in their 20's or 30's.

It is characterized by rough, red, scaly patches, crusts or sores measuring anywhere from one-quarter to one inch in diameter. AK's are usually found on the face, lips, scalp, neck, forearms, and the back of the hands.

People with fair skin, a history of a lot of time in the sun, or people with poor immune systems are at greater risks of developing AK's.

AK's are important to be watched by a doctor because they can lead to skin cancer.

There are a variety of treatments and therapies available.

Early diagnosis and treatment are imperative. Don't wait. This skin condition needs to be watched by a physicial, preferabley a dermatologist so as to make sure this disorder can be treated quickly if it becomes cancerous. Your doctor will educate you more about this skin conditon.
